I from Istanbul

Istanbul is the only city in the world that spans two continents, Europe and Asia, separated by the Bosphorus and connected by bridges, ferries and a constant flow of people, goods and ideas. Ottoman calligraphy may be the clearest expression of that complexity. In the Ottoman Empire, the Arabic script was used in a way that was entirely its own, with fluid forms, dramatic compositions and a refined sense of positive and negative space that elevated calligraphy to one of the highest art forms. Calligraphic panels adorned mosques, palaces and tombs. The written word was sacred, but also deeply beautiful.
