Q from Quebec

Québec City is unique in North America. It is the only city on the continent with intact medieval city walls, and the only one whose Old Town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through it, along Rue Saint-Louis, past Château Frontenac, down into the Basse-Ville, you experience something difficult to place: this is America, yet it sounds like France and looks like a European port city from the nineteenth century.

That Victorian influence is no coincidence. Québec served as a British administrative center from the eighteenth well into the nineteenth century, and that period left visible traces in its architecture, in the typography on historic buildings, and in the facades along the Grand-Allée. The Victorian typeface, serious, ornamental, with the confidence of a century that believed in its own civilization, fits the city perfectly.

But Québec is also French. The official colors of the province, the blue and white of the Fleurdelisé, are present in the city’s flag, on its signage, and in the collective consciousness of a community that has defended its linguistic identity with determination.
